This Privacy Policy describes how the Insect ID: AI Bug Identifier iOS application ("the App", "we", "us") handles your information. We built Insect ID to work with as little personal data as possible — no account is required to use the App.
1. Information we process
Photos you submit for identification
When you take or select a photo for identification, the image is transmitted securely to our identification service, where it is analyzed by an AI model to produce the species result. Photos are used solely to provide the identification you requested and to operate, debug, and improve the identification service. We do not sell your photos or use them for advertising.
Chat messages
Follow-up questions you ask about an identification are sent to our AI service together with the identification context so the AI can answer. Treat the chat like any online service: please don't include personal information you wouldn't want processed.
Identification history
Your saved identifications and chat history are stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device storage. Deleting the App deletes this history.
Purchases and subscriptions
Subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat to receive anonymous subscription status events (for example, that a subscription is active) so the App can unlock premium features. This involves a pseudonymous identifier, not your name or email.
Usage limits
The App tracks your daily scan count locally on your device to enforce the free tier (2 scans per day).
2. Information we do not collect
- No account registration, name, or email address is required or collected
- No precise location data is collected
- No contact list, microphone, or background camera access
- No sale of personal data, and no third-party advertising SDKs
3. Camera and photo library permissions
The App requests camera access so you can photograph insects, and photo library access so you can pick existing images. Both are used only when you actively choose to capture or select a photo. You can revoke these permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
4. Data retention
Identification history lives on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App. Images processed by the identification service are retained only as long as necessary to operate and improve the service, and are not linked to your identity.
5. Children's privacy
The App is suitable for general audiences and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Identification results are educational in nature.
6. Security
All communication between the App and our servers is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS. Requests are authenticated to prevent unauthorized use of the identification service.
7. Your rights
Depending on your region (including the EU/EEA under GDPR and California under CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data. Because the App stores your history on-device and does not maintain user accounts, most data is under your direct control — deleting the App removes it. For anything else, contact us and we will help.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, an in-app notice.
